My last report on GPS time to acquire a fix was 10 days ago. The Iconia Tablet has been indoors with GPS turned off all the time since a fix 10 days ago.
Time line from GPS turn On :-
Standing within 3 meters of where the GPS was turned Off.
20 seconds = 4 Satellites displayed, the various Satellites come and go rapidly.
60 seconds = 10 Satellites displayed some appearing as others disappeared.
3 minutes 45 seconds = 8 displayed and 4 Locked and Location displayed.
5 minutes = 8 Satellites Locked.
Conclusions
The Almanac was up to date, hence the Satellites to listen for are quickly displayed and listened for the signals on each channel as looked up in the Almanac. As time progresses each visible Satellite is synced and data decoded to obtain the first fix which took 3 minutes 45 seconds.
I can confirm that my in dash Radio/GPS/CD has the GPS running 24hrs a day. When the Ignition is turned off the GPS is kept running in background. I have 3 GPS applications that run under Windows CE 6.0. Each of these shows a fix with in 10 seconds of application loading. I can be driving along and start the GPS application and correct maps loads to show accurate position within a few seconds.
The Android OS & GPS
runs on the battery and this would not last long if GPS was powered all the time. Just make an allowance of 4 minutes for GPS to lock and you should be fine. If you have moved to a new location form where it was last used then the lock can take longer.
Oldtimer.
