Acer Iconia A500 Still Waiting For Wi-Fi Fix Update.

It’s been a while since I posted that Acer Support reported that the Wi-Fi connecting loop was fixed in next release. They implied it was due any day, well that was a couple of weeks ago. As of now no new update has appeared.

You may find this Acer link on the update process useful. Plus a few more at bottom of this Acer page.

GPS News

Again not much to report. I have just noticed that I have a “UK NEWS’ reader installed not the best as it does not support screen rotation. However it does start up the GPS and then gives a Java error because it does not get correct response. It then leaves the GPS running which will run the battery down if you don’t notice.

On my Android Phone you can drag down the top of the screen to reveal a menu panel that for one allows you to enable disable GPS Wi-Fi etc. This means it’s very easy to switch on/off as required and saves going through the settings. We could do with this on the Iconia, maybe with “Ice Cream Sandwich”?

I have reported before, that I think most of the GPS issues are application related. I suspect they are not calling the GPS function correctly or the application is not up to date with the GPS API (application programming Interface), hence different results from GPS depending which application has started the GPS and some conflicts occur when more than one application is trying to access the GPS at same time.

Lets hope that Acer moves to the new combined OS called

“Ice Cream Sandwich”

which hopefully will allow application developers to standardise between the Android Tablet & Android Phone devices.

What we are seeing is the pains of rapid Android development. With all the new features and the new Google apps it is well worth the wait and I for one am willing to put up with the gremlins.

Try This Tip.

In case like me you missed out on this one ‘On Home screen’ on a clear area hold finger for just over 1 second and a new menu appears for Widgets-Apps-Wallpaper-More. Have a play. I understand from other reports this feature may be removed in “Ice Cream Sandwich”.

Have fun,

OldTimer.

Read my posts for Jan 6th 2012 the Wi-Fi issue looks as though it’s fixed OK with the latest updates.
